Jesus died on a cross for the payment of sins. He didn’t die to save Himself for He was sinless. Jesus Christ went through one of the worst deaths in all of human history. The crucifixion was such a horrible and painful death that a new word was created from it: excruciating. He was mocked, beat upon, a crown of thorns forced onto his head, 39 (40 would kill you and they wanted you to feel the pain) lashings with a whip made up of 9 strips of leather with stone, bone, glass, and metal embedded in those strips to catch the flesh, he was falsely accused, arrested at night and kept awake all night leading to exhaustion, rocks thrown at Him, forced to carry a beam of wood that weighed up to 100 pounds, and nailed onto a rough piece of wood (this is after His flesh was torn from his body…imagine your entire body was cut open being forced up against rough wood), the nails were driven into some of the most sensitive parts of the body. It was hard to breathe. Every breathe meant pain raging throughtout your entire body. He was hungry. He was thirsty. All of the sin of the entire human race and the wrath that comes from that sin was placed upon Him. He didn’t die to save Himself. He died to save you and me.
