take dudes advice …
take dudes advice when he says “listen on a system that you are familiar with” — happened to me and my group — sounds great on the studio speakers but wasn’t adjusted to sound great on all lower quality decks and what not. Thanks for the info. Helpful video.

Respectfully, I disagree about converters. Crappy converters will put a noticeable limit on the quality of the overall sound. Compensating for mediocre converters steals time from mixdown. But nowadays most converters are pretty decent. And many multichannel interfaces also give you AES or s/pdif input, so you could have a bunch of mediocre ADC’s and 2-4 channels of something phenomenal.

My ordering would go as follows: player, instrument, engineer, ADC, preamps, mics, outboard&plugins

Yes, converting from 48k to 44.1k will be much more detrimental than either staying 44.1k or performing an easy-math conversion from 88.2k to 44.1k. Furthermore, the quality difference between 44.1k and 48k is almost negligible to begin with. To see for yourself, do some recording at both sample rates and then try to even tell the difference between them.
The 16bit-24bit difference is MUCH more important and you should always start projects at least 24bit.

Another producer (who does a lot of mastering for other artists) told me that converting 48K 24bit into 44.1 16 bit (to put it on CD) will not be good for the soundquality and will make it sound slightly different… He advices people to produce on 44.1 for this reason… Any input on this would be appreciated…

It is better to record at 32bit/192k to minimise quality loss between the master CD, The glass pressing plate then the final pressings. But even then it will never be as good as the original master. This is why 2″ analog tape to vinyl rules. In fact Tupac recorded on a 2″ Otari MTR-90 tape machine. Listen to his vinyl albums/singles it will prove my point. Besides can you drive your levels up to +9db on digital? No! exactly. With digital you “hear” music with analog you “experience” it

honestly I don’t like how he emphasized recording at 24 bit/48k. CD’s are 44.1 so I would rather record at 44.1. Much more important than the A/D converters (the least important link in the chain) is the overall sound achieved. In order of importance from highest to lowest: room, mics, preamps, outboard gear like compressors, and finally converters.
